WHAT HAVE YOU DONE?

Kane looked at the limp figure at his feet as the color drained from his cheeks. They he caught hold of himself. “Get up, Lawley. And quit faking it.”

But even though he tried to get his brother to respond, it wasn’t Lawley that spoke, but another voice. It was so sorrowful, yet Kane recognised it as the voice of the Father.

“Where is Lawley-Shaint, thy brother?”

Kane nudged the body again, then with head down responded, “I know not.” His voice dropped even lower though he muttered defiantly; “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

How was I to know that the brat would die like a dog--he felt a shiver go up his spine--or a lamb?

“What have you done? The voice of your brother’s blood cries unto me from the ground!“ There was anguish in the Father’s voice, but Kane steeled his heart against it.

The Father looked at him sorrowfully. I created you in love, my son, but you have hardened your heart against me. Oh, Kane, Kane, you are as precious to me as the one you have slain. Nevertheless I will not forsake you.

Kane would not meet the Father’s eyes. The Father, his Creator, sighed. Oh, if only he would repent, and be restored.

“Even the very ground you walk upon will reject you. It opened up to receive the blood you spilled but will refuse to support you like it did in former times.”

Kane’s glance flickered across the Father’s face then down again. Was the very grass withering beneath his feet, or did he just imagine it?

“If you continue trying to be a farmer, the land will not yield her strength to you, and you will keep wandering; searching for better places to make a living."

Kane’s shoulders stiffened, his face clearly was defiant but he had the presence of mind not to say so what? Of course he had failed to remember that the Father knew every thought that ever crossed his mind.

The Lord God lifted his chin with one finger so that Kane was forced to look into his eyes.

“You will be a fugitive and a vagabond,” the Father warned gently.

Then Kane lashed back and started to wildly exagerate; “My punishment is greater than I can bear! Behold YOU have driven me out from the face of the earth! YOU have hidden your face from me! I shall be a fugitive and a vagabond and everyone that finds me shall slay me!”
The implication was very clear; it is all your fault, Father. I am not to blame.

But the Father did not take offence. I wish Kane would have looked up and seen the love in the Father's eyes.

“You were not fully aware of the consequence of your act, but from this time forward all men will know how wicked it is to take another man’s life. That knowledge will help to protect you from violent men.”

Have you ever felt like Kane that everyone was against you? Remember God has put a seal of protection on you. It is His undying love. Wherever you go God will follow you, so don't think you have to keep running, running and if you do, turn and run straight into the arms of your loving Heavenly Father. He cares and understands, and wants to help you make the right decisions because He is your "Daddy".

"God is closer than our heartbeat."
