Every once in a while Tayletha, after a swift look around,
would dart out with a bucketful of dirt that she scattered
carefully in some hidden spot. Silas was too busy, and Rachel

"What I hate the most," Tayletha muttered angrily as she handed an empty bucket to Silas, “Is that they expose the babies to the battle.” From time to time the piercing wail of an infant or distinct childlike sobbing would reach their ears. "Why do they do that?” Rachel asked, cuddling her frightened infant against her shoulder...
Tayletha had hurried outdoors with another pail of dirt, but was soon back looking pale and
frightened.
“I just saw a warrior dash through the
trees.
I don’t know where he was going or what he was up
to.”
“Was he heading our way?” Silas demanded.
“No. No he was heading towards the settlement.
But he was carrying a torch! In broad daylight, at that! Oh, I hope he doesn’t
intend to set their thatched roofs on fire!”
