Dawn was lighting up the sky with all its radiant beauty when Mairekah turned away from the others and headed into the nearby city. Her heart was heavy, so very heavy. "Mairekah," Japheth called, jogging after her. “Don’t go into the city alone. It is too dangerous.” He clasped her in his arms and swung her around in his exuberance, but put her down when it was evident that she didn’t share his joy.
“What’s wrong, Mairekah?” he asked tenderly.
His young wife was so choked up she could barely speak. She raised her hand feebly to gesture as the luxuriant growth abounding on every side of the trail leading down to the city.
“All this will be destroyed. Destroyed, husband, and I am afraid it will be no where near as beautiful once the waters recede.” She sighed heavily and buried her face in a rose whose fragrance filled the air. “I have tried so hard to convince my loved ones…”
Her voice trailed off into a sob, and lifted her chin, “And this is what you got for your efforts,” he said, gently touching the area surrounding her eye which was swollen and black and blue.
Mairekah buried her head in his shoulder. “And you! You! Your arm was in a sling for such a long time after--they--those wicked bullies beat you up so brutally.”
“Yes, dear, but don’t pine. It feels as good as new now.”
“It does, eh?” A raging voice bellowed, startling them both. “Well, I can change that in a hurry!” A fur clad giant leaped out of the undergrowth followed by seven others all equally minded towards evil and destruction.
“Run, Mairekah, run,” Japheth shouted even while sinking from the first heavy blow.
